Not Where You Hoped to Be? You’re Not Alone

Hello Reader,

No matter how seasoned or strategic you are, failure still stings. Maybe it’s a job you didn’t land. A project that didn’t take off. A role you’ve outgrown but feel stuck in.

Career “failures” can feel like setbacks or worse, like signs you’re not enough. But that’s not the full story. And it’s definitely not the end of yours.

Rethinking Failure as Feedback and Not a Verdict

Here’s a truth we shared in last week’s Mentor Series webinar:
You are not the job you didn’t get.

You are not the project that fell flat.

You are not the missed promotion.

You are not the role you’ve outgrown but can’t yet leave.

You are not the manager who never saw your potential.

Too often, we absorb failure as identity. A silence after applying becomes, “I’m not qualified.” A tough interview becomes, “I’m not cut out for this.” A stagnant role becomes, “Maybe I’ve peaked.”

But career growth requires a different mindset one that separates outcome from identity.

As one of our coaches put it: “Create healthy distance between your core self and your performance.”

That means learning to see a job rejection or a difficult season at work not as a verdict on who you are, but as feedback insight you can use to adjust, reflect, and grow.

This isn’t about being overly positive or ignoring disappointment. It’s about recognizing that failure is part of every meaningful career path especially for those taking risks, leveling up, or pivoting.

So next time a “failure” hits hard, try walking yourself through these five questions:

  1. What happened?
(Name the event or outcome without judgment.)
  2. What story am I telling myself about it?
(Is it rooted in fact — or fear?)
  3. What’s actually true about me, regardless of this result?
  4. What could I learn, change, or try next time?
    (No shame, just strategy.)
  5. What do I want to believe about myself moving forward?

You’re not failing. You’re learning. And your worth isn’t up for negotiation.

If you're navigating a tough season or feel like your career story isn’t unfolding how you hoped, that doesn’t mean you’re off course. It means you’re still in motion.
